Limestone coral
Biogenous sedimentary rock.
This is an example of fossil tabulate coral (undermined location and age). Tabulate coral colonies like this one are known to occur in fossil reef deposits going back to Ordovician time, but the disappeared from the fossil record at the end of the Permian Period (or early Triassic Period). This sample is similar to fossil coral heads of Paleozoic age found in the Midwest, but it may possibly be from Paleozoic-age rocks in the mountains of Nevada or eastern Mojave region of Southern California. |
